denim & dots skirt tutorial

I love how this skirt turned out!

If you're looking for an easy and fast but really great look skirt tutorial, this is it!

When I started cutting out dance skirts the other day, I also waded through my monumental pile of fabric (a.k.a. my fabric stash) and found this fun denim leftover from a skirt I'd made myself about nine years ago. And then my eyes landed on that fun pink polka dot. Batta-bing! Batta-boom! Denim and dots. It's a match made in heaven.

So, let's get cooking! The first part of this tutorial is actually exactly the same as The Twirly Dance Skirt Tutorial. Cut your fabric into the lengths you want, making sure to cut one section longer than the other, cut out the pie shape for the waist and then stop! This is where things change....

Instead of creating a square, you're going to make a circle.

After you've figured out how long you want this circle, which will have to be the same or shorter than the width you cut it out, you begin cutting measuring down from the waist. So, like in the picture, I was cutting it six inches.

You keep going until you've cut it all out. And one of the best parts of these skirts is it there is a wide margin for error! Your circle doesn't need to be perfect. Sure, you don't want to get too wonky, but that circle above is far from perfect, but once I put it altogether and serged the edges, it looks great. Hopefully I'll finish these skirts up and share pictures of them soon, too.

Do this again with your other square, or length of fabric, only remember to make it longer. I think the polka dot fabric is about 3 inches longer than the denim.

After that point you continue on like the twirly skirt, only you don't have to worry about points and such. Simply find the four corners, so to speak, of each waist, match them up and do the same with your knit waist band.

Then....

Wah-LA! You'll have another skirt your girl is ready to twirl in...
